Village of Fairport IDA
Enhancing and strengthening the economy in Fairport
The Village of Fairport takes advantage of its easy and accessible waterfront, and places a high priority on projects that strengthen the relationship of the commercial district to the water. The Village of Fairport IDA is recognized for its success in leveraging private sector investment to create a vibrant, healthy local economy. Early redevelopment projects like The Box Factory ($2.63M), Packett’s Landing/Canal East ($2.3M), and The American Can Company ($1M) used industrial revenue bonds and land leases to strengthen the tax base, create jobs, and establish Fairport as a destination for boaters and tourists.
More recent projects (Sterling West, Towpath Park, Mulconry’s) have focused on redevelopment and adaptive reuse of buildings and land, adding energy to a busy waterfront and commercial district. It’s no surprise that Fairport is recognized as one of the best ports along the Erie Canal.
Top industries
- Tourism is an integral part of the local economy and businesses that attract both residents and visitors are important to us. These include boutique retail shops (Seasons of Fairport, CandyNation), restaurants (Joey B's, Donnelly’s, Mulconry’s, Blue Cactus), and recreational/water enhanced businesses like RV&E Bike and Skate, Erie Canal Paddleboat Company, and the Colonial Belle.
- Manufacturing and high-tech companies balance the economy and include LiDestri Foods, HP Neun, Viva Foam, Corning Tropel, and dozens of smaller firms.
- Professional and public service operations further balance the local economy. We are fortunate to count many public operations in our business district, including the Fairport School District, Fairport Public Library, Fairport Electric, and Fairport Village Hall.
- Creative and professional firms enjoy the character of the Village (so do their clients!) and Fairport is home to many sales and marketing operations, legal, engineering and financial service business, banks (Fairport Savings Bank, Bank of America and Fairport Federal Credit Union), and electrical engineering companies.
A success story
The Box Factory
The Fairport IDA issued $2.63M in bonds to redevelop and expand a building on the Erie Canal in the heart of the business district. We entered a long-term land lease agreement with the developers to make the project feasible. Today, the Box Factory has a variety of commercial tenants on its first floor (Fairport Village Coffee, Lickety Splits) and the second and third floors are fully occupied with professional, real estate, and financial service firms.
